I am excited to review today’s Monday Memory. We are looking back to April 20, 2023—just over 18 months ago yesterday. William and Kate were in Birmingham on a series of engagements highlighting the city’s economy and culture. I never really got a chance to review the engagement to begin with, because I was in labor with my son that day, so I can’t say I was paying much attention. I remember briefly seeing Kate in a bold burgundy, and it made me smile.
I didn’t circle back around to review the day; life was just too crazy in the weeks and months that followed. This day certainly deserves a second look, because I love Kate’s entire ensemble.
The Princess of Wales was wearing a deep merlot-colored trench dress from Karen Millen and Gianvito Rossi heels in a matching red suede.
This shade of red is so beautiful on Kate, and I like everything about the dress’s design, too. The trench style is unusual and fun and also very flattering, too—not bulky at all. The pleated skirt had beautiful movement.
Kate completed the look with Daniella Draper citrine necklace and earrings from Sézane. I am a fan of Sézane, but I have never been excited by these earrings. In the last couple years, Kate leaned in heavily to very busy, chunky style earrings, and I just never have gotten on board with them. I am definitely on record hoping we have a return to the Kiki McDonoughs, Catherina Zoraidas, etc. That said, I love the gold and citrine with the burgundy—beautiful color combo.
Although I would have preferred a different earring, this whole look was still a huge hit for me. And whenever I see pictures of this engagement, I think of my sweet baby.
Love that this memory gives you a sweet reminder of your own baby ❤️ I loved this look on Catherine then, and I still love it now!
Oh, how I agree with you, Jane, about the Princess's penchant for chunky costume jewelry earrings. I say this only somewhat tongue in cheek--"HOW CAN SHE when she has access to such beautiful fine jewelry with gorgeous gemstones?!?" (unless the jewelry is used to showcase a local jewelry designer on a royal tour). I can think of many of her costume jewelry earrings that I have rued the appearance of in recent years! Perhaps you could do a post on your favorites of her jewelry in these three categories--fine jewelry, her pieces borrowed from the Queen and the costume jewelry. I'd love to read your take on those different options. Thanks for another interesting Monday Memory!!
