I’ve not seen that Beatrice is a Counsellor of State? Her father still is and someone will have to move up now that Charles is King. Is Beatrice next senior after Harry?
Yes but that would make 5 and there are only 4 Counsellors Of State: The royal family's official website lists the Counsellors of State as Prince Charles (first in line), Prince William (second in line), Prince Harry (sixth in line), and Andrew (ninth in line). Before his death, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, also held the position (as all spouses of the sovereign do by law).Feb 17, 2022. Hmmm, maybe there are usually five but they went down to four after Philp’s death?
I think that’s why Harry renewed the lease on Frogmore—so he can claim he is still “resident” in England for being Counsellor of State. I see that Beatrice is “eligible” to be Counsellor of State but she is fifth down the list right now — Camilla, Queen Consort, Prince William, Prince Harry and Prince Andrew are the four ahead of her.
I think that's a good word for how I feel right now--"unsettled". So much of my life has been spent following the Royals--first the Queen, then Charles (with still the Queen), then Diana (with still the Queen), then the boys (with still the Queen).... I can't help thinking tonight of this almost same time 25 years ago when two boys did their grieving at Balmoral, in the shelter of their grandparents' love while their father flew to France to attend to the sad duty of bringing their mother home. And now there are two men up in Balmoral, grieving for their grandmother and probably grieving for their grandfather as well. I would hope with all my heart that this would melt the ice between them, that they could come together and heal.
I posted the video of the Queen with Paddington Bear during the Jubilee on my Facebook feed--her sweet smile and puzzled looks at Paddington Bear's antics with the teapot I think epitomized how she was as a grandmother and a mother.
I listened to ITV all morning from about 8 am Pacific time until ITV started its video tributes. I feel sorrowful. She came to the throne the year I was born. I remember watching her motorcade go by in Montreal in 1959. Her motorcade went past my grandmother’s house and we were all lined up waving flags. I have followed her and her family all my life. It’s an era passing, I don’t know what the future Royalist world will be like…..
On the subject of regnal names, my understanding is only 3 British monarchs have ever taken new regnal names, so it probably has more to do with typical practice than modernization. The three that I believe are the only ones to do so are Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and King George VI. Because they are all more recent monarchs, it may seem that it was the common, traditional practice, but I don’t think that’s so. Most have used their own names.
Camilla was not Princess of Wales. The title has to be granted by the monarch. She did not ask for it, or it was decided it would be kinder to the boys not to grant it. William and Catherine will have to be granted the Wales titles by Charles. We’ll see when that happens and whether William wants an investiture.
I am sorry; that's not accurate. Camilla was absolutely the Princess of Wales. It was decided she would use her secondary title because of the negative backlash she would have faced from holding the title so closely aligned with Diana at that time.
But yes, as noted in the post, Charles has to confer the title on William, and we expect him to.
I am looking forward to this new chapter. It will be interesting to see how Charles and William move the family forward from here on out. I am certainly rooting them, especially Charles. I am also interested to see what Harry and Meghan's game plan is going to be. Will they try to make peace or will they continue trashing him and William? Overall, thank you for your write up, Jane. It is certainly the end of an era. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Today also marks 3 years since my father passed away so it's been an especially gloomy day.
I had read somewhere that they had tried to visit her, but her staff had said that she was too busy with a schedule that could not be moved. I may be wrong about this.
It is highly likely as the Queen had a tight schedule a year in advance. Which proves again that neither Harry nor Meghan understood how the monarchy works: even though you were her grandson like Harry, you could not necessarily meet her as you wish! but Harry feel soooo entitled!
I really wonder if they'll use this as an opportunity to actually be the "part time royals" they originally wanted to be or just being in the UK on a more regular basis? So many questions!
I don't think Charles will allow them to be part time royals. I have always suspected that he and William were instrumental in denying them the half in half out deal they wanted. It's why they have so much bitterness and resentment towards William and Charles and not the Queen. I guess time will tell what the Sussexes' game plan is but I think they will play nice for now given the sympathy and support directed at the BRF and specifically Charles.
Thank you very much, Jane, for being so present today and for sharing throughout the day the fast breaking news. It was a comfort to be able to check your Instagram account and know that you were there and to read your thoughtful words on this very, very sad occasion.
The statement of "When the Queen dies, this will happen", has been used so frequently recently that the fact that she actually has passed is a bit surreal. Seeing the official statement from King Charles III, was something I just wasn't expecting when I woke up this morning.
As I've seen online since the news broke: "Long May She Reign in our Hearts".
As soon as it was announced that the Cambridges were moving to Windsor, in addition to QEII’s obviously declining health, I wondered if this was a stepping stone to them moving into Windsor castle, but timed for the children’s school commencement.
Is anyone else surprised by the inclusion of Beatrice in the council is state?

Queen Elizabeth II. They don’t make them like her anymore.
Her inspirational sense of duty is something that few have these days.
Even as an American it’s hard to imagine the loss of her presence.
May she Rest In Peace.
Best of wishes to King Charles III on his reign. I have a feeling it will be transformational.
Here, here.
Thank you for the write up. I’ve been glued to the news all day and shed many tears. The Queen will be greatly missed.
I am so sad today - thank you for the write up. It is certainly the end of an era - I feel like I lost my grandmother.

Two days ago The Queen met her 15th Prime Minister. Today she passed into history. She was a smart, tough lady. RIP QEIi.

I think H&M should try to make peace. They should have done that while his grandmother was alive. That would have given her such joy.
It has definitely crossed my mind today that Harry and Meghan may have many regrets that they did not visit her when they first landed in the UK.

A very emotional day. Even though I knew it would be coming sooner rather than later, it seemed a long way off.
Thank you Jane.
Thank you Jane. It just doesn’t seem real.

yes I am; I know how the list of Succession works but reading the names of Harry and then Andrew and NOT Anne or/and Edward comes as unfair!
Such a surreal day. I think it will take a while for this news to sink in. God bless Elizabeth Regina 🤍
