Today’s Monday Memory lands us on March 14, 2016. William and Kate joined other senior members of the royal family at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Service. In the short space of a split second, I just remembered that March is almost here…and that we will miss Kate at the Commonwealth Service this year. Sigh. I am continuing to pray for her full recovery.
I am trying to think back through the years to remember if this was an ensemble that divided fans? Most of her Erdem pieces create disagreement, and this was an Erdem. It was a custom piece adapted from a trench Erdem showed in their pre-fall 2015 collection.
I loved it at the time, and I love it still. The silhouette is such a good one on Kate, and I prefer it to some of her more full-bodied silhouettes from later Commonwealth Services. I also love the lace over the patterned fabric—that’s my maximalist design preference coming out, I guess, but I think it is interesting and feminine. Finally, I really liked the color. I wear grey often, so I am partial, but this is also such a great color on Kate.
This ensemble also was a big success because of the hat. This was a John Boyd picture hat that reminded me a little of some of Lady Mary’s hats from Downton Abbey, which was still running at the time. Oh, the good old days. :) Kate had worn a lot of toppers at that time, and I remember thinking that a broader brim was overdue and looked a little more elegant, too.
Kate completed the look with an Emmy London clutch and Rupert Sanderson heels—both in complementing grey suede. I think I liked that, too—the suede heels rather than shiny nude pumps.
Kate’s earrings were longtime and well-known UFOs at the time she wore them. I don’t think they were ever ID’d, but if they were, drop a line in the comment section. I always liked these, and Kate wore them a lot back in the day.
This ensemble still sticks out to me as one of my favorites, and although the lace overlay was kind of popular in the mid-2010s, I don’t think this outfit is super dated because of that. I think I generally prefer broad-brimmed on Kate these days.
That’s a wrap on the Monday Memory. Unrelated, but I had a number of Audible credits I needed to use up this week before they expired, so, among other things, I downloaded Spare. I never finished the book, but now I might get around to it. I am sure there are more gems to unearth! Has anyone else listened to the audio?
Not my favorite but I liked it from the back, loved the hat and the accessories.
Great write up, Jane! Maybe I should start the audiobook as well, I never finished Spare either 😕.
