News just broke that King Charles was admitted to the hospital for a brief period of observation related to his cancer treatment!
Sometime in the last month, my mom asked me if I thought King Charles is doing ok. I guess I have always assumed he’ll be fine. From the start, it has seemed like he’s been in relatively good health, and I thought it must be a pretty low-key cancer.
However, when the Palace announced toward the start of 2025 that the King would be continuing treatment this year, I did stop to wonder. I know there are cancers that require a pill for life—several of my friends’ parents have this type—but Charles’ treatment seems more involved than that. He gets weekly treatment. Today’s news that the King was briefly hospitalized feels alarming. The Telegraph reported:
Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital.
“His Majesty’s afternoon engagements were therefore postponed.
“His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary programme will also be rescheduled.
“His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.”
Of course, Buckingham Palace is playing this down, and sources told the Telegraph that “the King’s ongoing recovery path continues in a positive direction.” But, for me, this is a major warning bell. We know the Palace will always play down the seriousness of a monarch’s illness. I am not a doctor or a cancer expert, but hospitalization feels concerning, especially this far into his treatment.
One wonders what is really going on behind palace doors on this one.
I heartily agree with your thoughts. People who are hospitalized because of cancer are not doing so because a little cough. However, issues arise with ports and infections can happen so maybe it’s something like that?
I have wondered, esp after the announcement that his treatment would continue through this year, if he has the kind of cancer considered "treatable" vs "curable", where the progression can be slowed and/or symptoms managed. But then perhaps it's as simple as some dizziness, and they are being extra cautious with the Italy trip coming up. I think if Charles is able to resume his schedule and proceed with the trip, it will be less of a worry.
