Are the royals taking advantage of taxpayers?

Prince William is in South Africa for the Earthshot Awards. I have been watching the live feed of the green carpet while I write this post. Various celebrities including Heidi Klum, Robert Irwin (Steve Irwin’s son), and others have joined William in Cape Town for the awards ceremony. Obviously Kate was not going to join William halfway around the world, given her current recovery mode. But during an event in the lead up to this evening’s awards, William told a reporter that Kate is “doing really well” and hopefully watching the ceremony at home with the children. It is heartening to hear a more upbeat update from William, given his more subdued remarks right after Kate’s chemo video. Cause for celebration!

William has really been branching out with his style lately. After the royals’ summer break, William seems to be debuting a new look—a second sartorial shift for him. The first shift was years ago when he moved from wearing the same very conservative dark suit and dark shoes to more fashionable pieces—suede shoes, sport coats in different shades, etc. It was a sporty, relaxed, and polished look. At the time, it seemed Kate was exerting some fashion influence on William, and I was a big fan. I can’t say I am as on board with the shift we are seeing right now. What is going on here?
