Tomorrow, Celebrate the Queen with a Victoria Sponge Cake
Royal Wedding Day is a national holiday at my house, but you all know I love any excuse to celebrate a royal-themed day. This is a reminder email to those of you who also like to pull out your tea pot, because tomorrow we have some celebrating to do.
This morning, Emily Nash shared a lovely little report on her Instagram about a tea party the Queen hosted at Sandringham House today—the eve of the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne. The Queen hosted locals from the area at the party that included a beautiful cake. She looked absolutely radiant (albeit thin) in the photos Emily shared.
(I am new to Substack, so I hope the Instagram post properly embeds above… If it does not, you can find the post on Emily’s Instagram (@emilynashhello).
This video of the Queen saying she’d put a knife in the cake and let someone else do the rest has me chuckling.
In any event, I got a message from a reader this morning. She told me that tomorrow she will be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with homemade cream tea on a tea set from Hampton Court Palace accompanied by a Victoria Sponge Cake using the recipe shared by Buckingham Palace several years ago!
It took me about three seconds to decide I have to do the same. I don’t have a tea set from Hampton Court, but my Royal Doulton will do. My fiancé gave me a pink Kitchen Aid for Christmas, and this will be its inaugural project. I Googled and found the recipe Bukingham Palace shared. It is still on the royals’ website, available at this link.
The royals will be celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee this whole year, so you will have other opportunities, but if you have time, I hope you enjoy tea and sponge cake tomorrow.
Now I am off to the store for flour and sugar…
