Over the weekend, I was sifting through some old photos of Kate and feeling quite nostalgic, so you can imagine my delight when I learned that William, Kate, and their children are holidaying with the Middletons on Mustique. Only Carole has been reported present, but I feel certain Michael is also along—it wouldn’t be the first time he’s been forgotten in a report, poor guy. Someone messaged me on Instagram to say she was on the BA flight to St. Lucia, and passengers were told to stay seated for ten minutes after landing (to allow the royal party to deplane).

As you know, Mustique, in addition to being a favorite locale of the late Princess Margaret, has been a favorite holiday destination for the Middletons for decades.

William, or at least Kate, went every year around the end of January/beginning of February to celebrate Carole’s birthday (January 31st), but their schedule seemed to shift a little once they had two young children. The little family did not travel to the island in 2016, instead, they took a vacation to the Alps in March and, later, to Biarritz and, I also suspect, the Luberon. In 2017, they once again skipped the trip and instead attended the BAFTAs together for the first time.

In 2018 and 2019, they vacationed on Mustique, but in July rather than January/February, which was a big shift. Obviously, in January and February of 2020, the royal family was in the turmoil of Harry and Meghan’s flameout, and COVID-19 had dragged the world to a standstill by July. 2021 was still very locked down in the U.K. This is, to my knowledge, their first visit to Mustique since 2019.

Kate loves Mustique. In 2018, it was reported that Kate told a friend she was desperate for a vacation to Mustique, so I imagine as she has emerged from the fog of war with cancer, her mind has turned to Mustique—a place with such long and happy memories for her and her family.

One reason the royals love Mustique is the privacy. It’s a private island, and it does not allow reporters or photographers, plus it has a no-fly zone, which means no helicopter paparazzi. The clientele is quite “elite,” providing another buffer of comfort for people as famous as the Waleses.

Still, here are some details about Mustique that we have gleaned over the years.
