By recent royal standards, October was a busy month. After almost a year struggling against cancer, the Princess of Wales returned to just a few (both unannounced ahead of time) engagements. Courtiers were careful to stress that Kate’s meeting with Liz Hatton was not an official engagement, but few royal watchers split hairs on that point. Just a few days later, we did get an actual official engagement, when Kate joined William in Southport to grieve with the families of the little girls murdered in July and to meet with emergency responders and support professionals.

About halfway through the month, the spotlight shifted to the King and Queen. Charles and Camilla flew halfway ‘round the world to undertake their first tour of Australia and Samoa as King and Queen.
