The rumors that the Sussexes’ marriage is on the rocks are at fever pitch these days. I get a lot of DMs asking me about the veracity of the claims. Of course, I don’t know any more than the next person whether Harry and Meghan are in personal crisis. But we can look at some of the data points.
First, in the world of royal gossip, where there is smoke, often there is fire. Not always but often. The smoke has to be from the right sources to indicate an actual fire. It has been hard for me to determine how much of these rumors emanate from likely reliable sources or if they were fabricated by a few unreliable gossip rags and primarily stoked by the wishful thinking of people who just love hating Meghan and Harry. But, there are pieces of the story that suggest there could be trouble in paradise. Let’s go from the more general to the more specific.
Just generally, the couple are under tremendous stress. How they are perceived—how they perceive themselves to be perceived—is clearly a top priority to them both. When I watched their Netflix series, I was actually stunned by how they unintentionally underscored that their need for public approval is pathologic. I mean that with absolutely no snark. The extent of their obsession was probably the most stunning revelation of the series.
